Alibaba Cloud: Pros, Cons, and Services

Alibaba Cloud is the obvious candidate when your users are in Asia and the hyperscaler regions near them are expensive or thin on capacity. It is the largest cloud provider in China by a wide margin, it has 31 regions worldwide, and its pricing in Southeast Asia is often the lowest credible quote you will get. The catch is ecosystem depth outside China: fewer third-party integrations, documentation that lags, and a procurement conversation you may need to have with your own customers.

This is an honest assessment of both sides, with the figures Alibaba and independent analysts publish rather than marketing adjectives. If you are weighing it against the other large Chinese provider, our Alibaba versus Huawei comparison runs the two side by side.

Where Alibaba Cloud is genuinely strong

Scale in Asia is the headline. Alibaba Cloud’s own locations page lists 107 availability zones in 31 regions, including the first public cloud regions in the Middle East (Dubai) and Indonesia, with Tokyo on five zones and Singapore on four. If you sell into Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand or the Philippines, there is a local region rather than a hop to Singapore.

Market position backs that up. DatacenterDynamics, reporting Omdia’s Q4 2025 data, put Alibaba at 37% of mainland China cloud infrastructure spend against Huawei’s 17% and Tencent’s 10%, in a market that grew 26% year on year. Domestic dominance funds the international build-out, and it means the platform is tested at genuinely large scale.

The AI investment is real too. On its August 2026 earnings call Alibaba reported external cloud revenue up 45% year on year — a 22-quarter high — and AI-related product revenue at an annual run rate of RMB 49.5 billion, about US$7.3 billion. The Qwen model family has the widest open-weight following of any Chinese lab, which matters if you want to run a model yourself rather than rent an endpoint.

Where it will frustrate you

The gaps are operational rather than technical. Documentation for newer services sometimes appears in Chinese first and in English later, or describes a console that has since changed. Error messages occasionally arrive untranslated. None of this stops a competent team, but it adds hours, and you should budget them.

What to plan around
  • Third-party tooling: monitoring, backup and CI vendors often support AWS, Azure and Google first, and Alibaba later or through a community plugin.
  • Hiring: the pool of engineers with deep Alibaba Cloud experience outside Asia is small.
  • Customer perception: enterprise and public-sector buyers may ask where their data sits and who can access it. Have a documented answer ready.
  • Promotional pricing: year-one discounts are generous and year-two renewals are not. Model three years.

There is also the question nobody puts in a feature table. If your own clients audit your supply chain, adding a Chinese provider may trigger a review. That review is usually passable with documentation about region, encryption and access control, but it costs calendar time. Find out before you migrate, not during.

The services you will actually use

The catalogue is broad — several hundred services — but most projects use a dozen. Here are the ones that come up repeatedly, with the equivalent you probably already know.

NeedAlibaba Cloud serviceClosest AWS equivalentNotes
Virtual machinesElastic Compute Service (ECS)Amazon EC2Instance families mirror the usual general, compute and memory split
Object storageObject Storage Service (OSS)Amazon S3S3-compatible API for most operations, which helps migrations
Managed MySQL and PostgreSQLApsaraDB RDSAmazon RDSPolarDB is the cloud-native option with separated storage and compute
KubernetesContainer Service for Kubernetes (ACK)Amazon EKSManaged control plane, standard kubectl workflow
Content deliveryAlibaba Cloud CDNAmazon CloudFrontStrong node coverage in Asia; check pricing per region

Private networkingVirtual Private Cloud (VPC)Amazon VPCSame subnet, route table and security group concepts

The API-compatibility point is worth a sentence. Because OSS speaks most of the S3 API, tools that target S3 frequently work with an endpoint change, which removes a chunk of migration effort. Database and networking migrations behave like any other cloud-to-cloud move: the schema travels easily, the surrounding automation does not.

Region and zone planning

Region choice decides latency, legal exposure and price, and it cannot be changed after you create resources. Alibaba’s ECS regions and zones documentation, last updated in September 2026, lists every region with its zone identifiers; the locations page adds the zone count and launch year. Use both when you plan.

Two zones is the practical minimum for anything you would describe as production, because a single instance in a single zone carries the lower availability target explained in our IaaS guide. Alibaba also warns in its own documentation against pairing Johor and Singapore as mutual disaster-recovery regions, which is the kind of detail that only appears if you read the regional notes.

What it costs, and how the bill behaves

Pricing is competitive, particularly in Asian regions, and the structure will feel familiar: pay-as-you-go, subscription for a discount, preemptible instances for interruptible work, and resource plans for storage and transfer. The behaviour that catches people out is the renewal. A twelve-month subscription bought at a launch discount renews at a different number, so put the renewal date in your finance calendar on day one.

  • Model egress explicitly. Outbound internet transfer is metered per gigabyte and varies by region. Estimate your monthly volume before you commit.
  • Check the support tier. Basic support is not the same product as a paid plan with a response-time commitment. Price the plan you will actually need.
  • Tag from the start. Cost allocation after the fact is painful on any cloud, and the reporting tools here are less forgiving than most.
  • Use subscription for steady workloads only. Anything seasonal belongs on pay-as-you-go or preemptible capacity.

Compliance questions to settle first

Settle four things in writing before the first production workload lands. Which region holds the data, and whether that satisfies your own contracts. Who can access it, and from which jurisdiction. Whether a public website needs an ICP filing, which applies to mainland China regions and not to Hong Kong or Singapore. And what your exit plan costs in egress charges at list rates.

Every cloud decision is reversible. The question is only what reversing it costs, and the answer is usually measured in gigabytes.

Who should put a workload here

Put a workload on Alibaba Cloud if you serve Asian users and latency matters, if your compute bill is large enough that a 20% price difference funds real engineering time, or if you want to work closely with the Qwen models. Look elsewhere if your team is small and needs excellent documentation, if your customers audit your suppliers tightly, or if you depend on a long tail of third-party integrations. For many European and North American businesses, Google Cloud or another hyperscaler is the lower-friction choice, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a migration.

Eudora Technology works remotely across time zones, which means we can run an Alibaba Cloud estate for a client in a different hemisphere without anyone needing to be in the building. Our cloud solutions work covers assessment, migration and ongoing operation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Alibaba Cloud reliable enough for production?

Yes, with the same caveats as any provider: run across at least two availability zones, use managed database backups, and test a restore. The platform carries China’s largest shopping events, so capacity and resilience at scale are proven. Your architecture still determines what your users experience.

Will our data be subject to Chinese law?

Data stored in a region outside mainland China is governed primarily by the law of that jurisdiction, but the corporate structure, support access paths and your own contractual commitments all matter. This is a question for your legal team with the specific region named, not a question with one general answer.

How does the pricing compare with AWS?

List prices for comparable instances in Asian regions are typically lower, sometimes noticeably. The gap narrows once you apply AWS commitment discounts and widens again on storage and transfer. Build a three-year model for your own workload, including renewal rates and support, rather than comparing hourly rates.

Can we use S3 tools with Object Storage Service?

Mostly. OSS supports much of the S3 API, so many backup, sync and migration tools work after an endpoint change. Test the specific operations you depend on, particularly multipart uploads, lifecycle rules and signed URLs, before you rely on the compatibility in production.
